Weekly Fix #7

A couple smaller projects, along with a string of singles from the Madden 20 soundtrack. Also Chance 4, if it even deserves that title.

Here’s a link to the Week #7 Playlist for y’all

-----PROJECTS-----

DJ Muggs & CRIMEAPPLE – Medallo
Excellent instrumentals from Muggs, but I’m still not sold on CRIMEAPPLE’s delivery. Some tracks, especially ones with minimal drums, almost feel like he’s rapping acapella with Muggs throwing a beat on later. Very lavish, orchestral, and dark-hearted New York underground.

YBN Cordae – The Lost Boy
As a debut album, it does the trick. YBN establishes himself as a rap-savior with slightly above average bars, and paired with some really good beats the album serves as a good listen. The features are exceptionally good on here as well. Feel-good rap, mainstreamish, some older soulful sounds.

Chance the Rapper – The Big Day
This is most definitely Chance’s Big Day…. If the “Big Day” involved royally shitting your pants in front of the entire internet. I’m not going to say the album is trash, it has highlights, but this easily could have been two separate albums, including the singles from last year (which are strangely missing?), with two different goals. As it stands, the Big Day is just a big fuckin mess. Mainstream, vanilla, pop-rap, some trap, singing, yeah it’s just all over the place.

Rich Brian – The Sailor
Production has had a major upgrade from Amen, but Rich Brian is just not a very capable MC. I will give it to Brian that English is his second language, but some of these bars and flows are downright bad.

Papoose – Food For Thought
Small mixtape with very short tracks over dusty-ass beats. Some good stuff, for Papoose will probably always be a good emcee. Boom-bap, old new York.

Slim Thug – King of the Nawf
Thugga raps over some more mainstream beats from recent memory (more than a few from ScHoolboy’s last album).

KXNG Crooked – Menace II Society
Small EP from ex-Slaughterhouse MC. They are repurposed tracks, with reworked instrumentals and themes from older classics. Crook is sharp and precise with his words on here, with some fantastic rhyme schemes and flows.

Yung Bans – MISUNDERSTOOD
Bans really brings nothing new to the table here in terms of drugged out, heavily auto-tuned trap crooning, but some of the collabs here are good. Soundcloud/emo rap.

-------SINGLES-------

Future (Feat. Lil Keed) – Undefeated
Short, strange, and many-voiced trap track. Future and Keed come with weird flows and vocal inflections, leading to a track that may not be amazing quality, but it sure is unique.

Denzel Curry (Feat. Tate Kobang) – Shawshank
First of 4 tracks from the Madden 20 soundtrack. Run of the mill Florida banger, would sound right at home on ZUU.

Snoop Dogg – Madden 20
A little lazy, but a decent enough for a track made for Madden 20. West coast vibes.

Don Toliver (Feat. Wiz Khalifa) – Back Up
Nice little melodic track. Loving the quality of Toliver’s voice, with it’s warbles and whatnot. Good trap.
