Week #24 ('20) Art Appreciation
Welcome to my weekly Art Appreciation post, where I provide a list of some amazing album covers, single art, and random art that have come out within the past week. I’ll give you the artist/photographer/painter/magician’s name, as well as any social media or websites where you can go and check out more of their work. Click here to go back and see some other Art Appreciation posts.
Something I love about good art (especially ones that represent music) is how one image can contain so much detail and information about the artist, the musician, and the music itself; you can learn a lot about the music at hand without even really listening to it, which has always been fascinating to me. That’s not to say that the minimal pieces like Yeezus or untitled unmastered aren’t relevant and powerful in their own rights, but look at some of the pieces here and take note of the “completeness” you see, with so many ideas wrapped up in a tidy image. All praises due to these artists, and, as always make sure you use these social links and go out there and follow these talented people!

End of Daze, by Spillage Village
This is one of those pieces that look like a labor of love, and a showing of deep respect for the musicians that received this amazing art. The detail in the picture is a great representation of not just the track and the things said within it, but also the ideas that sort of fuel the Spillage Village collective (you can see the headpiece on the Skeletor-like figure saying “Spilligion), from the notion that the collective is here to save all of us muthafukas from the rap Armageddon to the heavy bear imagery that has played throughout their works for years. I can spot the EARTHGANG boys in the green bear masks, and J.I.D. triumphantly leading the pack and looking ahead to the future, but I can’t place the other members among the throng. My favorite part of this shit is that damn little bear cub at the center of attention, ready to bite your ass. I love that this art is one part Renaissance finery/one part Death Metal art, and I’m all here for it.

Thank You for Using GTL, by Drakeo the Ruler & JoogSzn
Once I went back and looked at some of the other work this guy has done, I recognized a lot of great art that I had seen before that I loved: the album art for LNDN DRGS last LP, and the single art for YBN Nahmir’s single Talkin’ among many others. Usually it’s this art style that gets me well enough: it reminds me a lot of those dumbass Garbage Pail Kid cards that they used to sell? Anyone remember them shits? It’s an exaggerated style that likes to throw a lot of imagery and symbols associated with the artists or the ideas they represent, giving you a pretty clear image of the music you are about to listen to at the musicians connection to it. This piece especially is perfect at setting the stage of this project: Drakeo in jail, spitting his verses over the GTL while JoogSzn puts together a project at his home studio. The split image with both of them holding up the title is some 90’s shit to the core, reminding me of something Will Smith would have done with Jazzy Jeff. Go follow Gallery Provence, because he is a machine constantly churning out quality content.
