Week #32 ('20) Art Appreciation

Welcome to my weekly Art Appreciation post, where I provide a list of some amazing album covers, single art, and random art that have come out within the past week. I’ll give you the artist/photographer/painter/magician’s name, as well as any social media or websites where you can go and check out more of their work. There’s a difference between the abstraction of Cubism or Surrrealism, which is more of a different way to approach ideas geometrically and culturally, and what I consider to be “true” abstraction, which, in my mind, is kind of like a chaotic and visual white noise, where ideas can be seen faintly if you squint long enough and really challenge yourself to find that meaning in there. Does that mean that Picasso is a better artist than Pollack because Picasso’s “message” is more legible (relatively of course)? Of course not, but the messages and connections you’ll find in these paintings only go as far as you’re willing to think about them. Food for thought.

Remember, use this post to follow and subscribe to these artists; they deserve as much recognition as the musicians they are attached to.

The relationship between the colors here is simply fascinating; instead of being a flat spread of colors (done with what looks like colored pencil, which would normally add to the flat aesthetic) you get a clear sense of depths, climbing further and further down into this three-dimensional storm of reds, yellows and blues. Very much like a cataclysmic storm, it’s like we’re looking down into the eye of an artistic hurricane, the eye of which is blood red. My favorite aspect of this are the walls of this storm, with little tendrils of color reaching into the middle of the piece, rendered as a descending stack of two-dimensional planes of color. Despite having a clear end, this stacked-plane thing going on here gives me this sense that the structure we’re in, if we were to change perspective rearward, would be entirely infinite. Despite being so full of color, there is still a darkness and uncertainty with the image, like being trapped in a way. This is one of those pieces you just kind of stare at for a long time, learning the mysteries of life.

Secrets, by Starker & al.divino

Now this piece is a special one, because I’ve always thought that the entirety of the  Lynn, Massachusetts scene right now (which includes such gems as Estee Nack, Codenine, and, the artists of the piece on question, al.divino himself) was abstract art in music form. The beats are completely off the wall, the lyrics will jump almost nonsensically between various references and lyrical detours, and voices that can be harsh and unorthodox, bringing in all of these discordant elements and profiting from the chaos it creates. This new painting form divino comes out and says some pretty bold statements unabstracted, namely “THE MOORS TOOK EUROPE OUT OF THE DARK AGES” asserting itself as universal fact. With the tic-tac-toe board and what looks like the word “MATHEMATICS” written in the background, it’s clear that divino is bringing 5 Percenter ideology into this painting, but what makes this unique is that these ideologies presented put the main focus of the piece, a giant portrait of a fucked up Mickey Mouse wearing a Fez, in relief both physically and ideologically. The modern “truth” is represented by Mickey, a systematic apparatus of lies that divino is trying to overcome by giving you the direct truth of the matter. This piece gives off big Dada vibes, with the lunacy on the exterior giving way to deep messages conveyed through ideas that you already have a mental image of, distorted to get your brain juices flowing. Whether or not divino had all of this in mind when creating this painting, that’s what I’m walking away from it with, and y’all are free to form your own views; that’s the beauty of abstract art!
