Week #45 ('20) Art Appreciation

Welcome to my weekly Art Appreciation post, where I provide a list of some amazing album covers, single art, and random art that have come out within the past week. I’ll give you the artist/photographer/painter/magician’s name, as well as any social media or websites where you can go and check out more of their work. There were very few releases this week, so I had a smaller pool of artists to choose from to give the spotlight for Week #45, but I had an easy time with the one piece I got for you down below.

While looking at it, take into consideration the ways that movie media (trailers, posters, etc.) and music media (album front and back covers, inner booklet, OBI strips, etc.) have a lot more similarities than differences.

I’d like to thank everyone who actually takes the time to read these posts here: I know it’s not “music”, but these artists are very important to the hip-hop culture, directly benefitting the consumption of music in ways that deserve praise. And to all of the artists that have reached out to me, I appreciate the love; it’s definitely mutual.

Remember, use this post to follow and subscribe to these artists; they deserve as much recognition as the musicians they are attached to.

Ransom Blvd, by Primo Profit & Michaelangelo

I don’t think I’ve ever seen something so blatantly 80’s before, and I’ve got to say if there was any sort of artistic aesthetic that we should bring back it most definitely should be this stuff right here. The sportscar, the bloody font, lens flares everywhere, and the inexplicable lighting every-fuckin-where is just so over the top and beautiful, making me feel like I’m about to watch Back to the Future 7: Marty Moves Weight, or Highlander 5: There Can Only Be One Kingpin. I’m loving this frame within a frame thing Fred has going on here, the red borders framing a cityscape darkened and green’d, while the inner box is giving us sort of a taster of story elements. It’s like getting the setting and tantalizing plot points all in one image. I also fucking with how this is presented as a sort of actor/director style, being “presented” by Michaelangelo, and “starring” Primo Profit; like I said in the intro, the differences between movies and music might be smaller than we think, and embracing the seriousness of the talent behind the scenes do wonders for the listening experience. Fred has done SO many pieces that I recognize from past releases, so go and check out this guy’s amazing work over on his Instagram.
