Week #47 ('20) Art Appreciation

Welcome to my weekly Art Appreciation post, where I provide a list of some amazing album covers, single art, and random art that have come out within the past week. I’ll give you the artist/photographer/painter/magician’s name, as well as any social media or websites where you can go and check out more of their work. Not everything in this art-game needs to be some sort of grand expression that takes weeks/months/years masterfully crafting on some Da Vinci shit. Sometimes, especially for amateur artists like myself (and when I call myself an amateur artist I am saying that I’m totally shit), the best stuff just comes spontaneously, and even though you may not be a “classically-trained” artist, you can still produce something that speaks true to yourself and your ideas. You’ll see below you some pieces that don’t look like Rembrandts or Van Goghs, but they look like they were done with love by people who care. I mean, look at the shit I do here; you can call writing an art, but do you think I have any training in this shit? Y’all, I haven’t been trained how to do a fuckin’ thing except pick out a good watermelon, so if you’re waiting on some instruction on how to follow your dreams, stop. In the words of the immortal Labeouf: Just Do It.

Remember, use this post to follow and subscribe to these artists; they deserve as much recognition as the musicians they are attached to.

CHOMP, by Russ

At first I thought that this was some sort of blurry photo of a pit-bull, but reading up on KidSuper’s process on this one explains a different story. He actually painted a portrait of a wolf on an iPad, a sort of one-off drawing that he sharpened and crisped up to make the image that you see here. It’s both fantastical and disgustingly real, colorful and dark. It’s like being in a dark room, being able to barely make out the danger in front of you, but whenever the animal crawls into the light you’re ready for some BARS. My favorite part of this piece by far is that mouth, the most monstrous thing in the painting; its gross and jagged, making everything about the word CHOMP really fly off of the page into your brain. The actual physical “CHOMP” text superimposed over the top is merely a cherry on top of this nightmare of an image. KidSuper has been working with Russ for a long time in both his album cover and fashion endeavors, so take a look at their relationship to see more of his work.

Panaeng, by RLX & Brown13

Now here is something more my speed; honestly looks like some shit I would draw bored at work (before I spent every moment not stacking apples writing all of this shit you see here on That Soup Dude’s Kitchen). I had no earthly idea what in the fuck Panaeng was before this EP came out, but looking around on Google Images I’ve seen some pretty scrumptious looking dishes floating around there. I wish I knew more about RLX to be able to determine where he’s drawing his inspiration from here, whether or not he’s drawing from Malaysian, Thai, or whatever other culture eats this variety of curry, but whatever the case may be my dude here chef’n it up is a boss. Dude’s got peppers… green stuff… yellow stuff….. I’ll be straight with y’all I have no idea what this stuff is made of but, I’m not gonna lie, I’d eat it. All joke’s aside, I like the simplistic art direction of the dude here, a sort of cartoon doodle a couple steps removed from a stick figure, with a surprising amount of character in the face: the bloodshot eyes (workin’ too hard I’d imagine), huge eyelids, and that lip-biting concentration look he’s got going on is all quality. An extra layer of manga-like sickness is layered over it with the slashes over the image to imply fast movement, a panaeng machine if there every was one, whipping up a bowl of it at lightning speed. Maybe this is how RLX cooks up his rhymes: fast, but you get a hot-ass bowl of panaeng (bars I guess?) in the end.
