Week #3 ('21) Art Appreciation

Welcome to my weekly Art Appreciation post, where I provide a list of some amazing album covers, single art, and random art that have come out within the past week. I’ll give you the artist/photographer/painter/magician’s name, as well as any social media or websites where you can go and check out more of their work. Since we’ve been on a streak of learning more about me, Tha Soup Dude, here’s another tidbit about me: I don’t follow a single sport. Not a one. So an album like Patat, while being fire with the rhymes, has a whole host of football references that go completely over my head. Even the art piece I have for you this week I don’t 100% understand… but you know what? It looks sick. Sometimes that’s all that matters.

Remember, use this post to follow and subscribe to these artists; they deserve as much recognition as the musicians they collaborate with.

So yeah like I said, I don’t know a damn thing about football (and I mean real football, not that thing people here in America watch); could I tell you the name of a single one of these fine gentlemen on this movie-poster-esque piece? Not at all. But it all comes down to this fact: even if I don’t know what’s going on, I can still get a sense that what I’m looking at is themed, that the elements to it have a purpose beyond my understanding. Three things I want to point out here, and the first is this excellent use of collage. Different images pasted over each other to great effect; I even love the little bit of graph paper down at the bottom of the piece to give it this DIY kind of feel to it. Next is the great color theme: it’s very possible this is in reference to a specific football club of whose existence I am totally unaware, but the oranges and the blues mesh nicely among both the players and the little detail elements in the piece, like the street markers and business signs. Lastly, draw your attention to the base structure of the piece: it’s a radial piece, with all of the action emanating out from the center. You can see that the flow of action doesn’t come towards you or point towards anything, it just spreads out to take up as much kinetic space in the piece as possible, a common technique used in various poster medias, especially movie posters. Big ups to both Feo and Kat for exposing me to more Football culture with this one image than I get in a decade.
