AOTY #3: Westside Gunn - Hitler Wears Hermes 7 [2019]
Welcome to my Album of the Year highlights! I’ll give you a little run down with a brief history to start, show you the tracklist (with the tracks in bold being my favorites) with all of the featured guests (if any), give you some descriptors that might make you more inclined to check it out (if my recommendation isn’t ain’t for you), and I’ll provide links to stream/buy the project down at the bottom. Enjoy!
Westside Gunn is going to be a legend one day. No one in this new wave of high-fashion rappers has the charisma, the machismo, and the undying drive to grind the way that the FLYGOD has, and the unreal string of projects that he already has under his belt would sun even your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper. Hitler Wears Hermes is his mixtape series that goes all the way back to the beginnings of the Griselda collective, and contains the quintessence that runs through it’s heart: art, fashion, and the streets. But all good things must come to and end, and damn what and end HWH has come to; the seventh volume bookends an unmistakably mythic run. High-class beats, consistently grimy lyrics, and a magnificent spread of features place this as arguably the best project Westside Gunn has released yet.
