AOTY #6: JPEGMAFIA - All My Heroes Are Cornballs [2019]
Welcome to my Album of the Year highlights! I’ll give you a little run down with a brief history to start, show you the tracklist (with the tracks in bold being my favorites) with all of the featured guests (if any), give you some descriptors that might make you more inclined to check it out (if my recommendation isn’t ain’t for you), and I’ll provide links to stream/buy the project down at the bottom. Enjoy!
JPEGMAFIA is a mad genius. Veteran from last year showed glimpses of his endlessly creative mind, but All My Heroes Are Cornballs pulls out all stops and lets his eccentricities flow. His most venerable, expressive, varied, enigmatic, melodic, and artistic tendencies shine brightly during the ups and downs experienced across the 18 track album. I would hesitate to call this “hip-hop” however, and in fact I don’t think you can classify this album at all other than experimental. You can find more traditional rapping in flashes, but the electronic influences weight out any sort of traditional genres. There’s noise on here, industrial, some vaporwave, some more stable sampled instrumentals, even some pop sensibility here. You can’t pin this man down, and All My Heroes Are Cornballs will surprise you at every turn.
