AOTY #7: Griselda - Wwcd [2019]

Welcome to my Album of the Year highlights! I’ll give you a little run down with a brief history to start, show you the tracklist (with the tracks in bold being my favorites) with all of the featured guests (if any), give you some descriptors that might make you more inclined to check it out (if my recommendation isn’t ain’t for you), and I’ll provide links to stream/buy the project down at the bottom. The Buffalo boys have had a hell of a year, that much is to be said. With six other projects under their belt between the three of them and a deal with Shady Records, Gunn, Benny and Conway sought fit to cap off the year with the long awaited collaborative project under the Griselda name. Wwcd, short for What Would Chinegun Do, is a sonically consistent foray into the darkness found at the heart of Griselda’s earliest projects. With Daringer at the helm of the album’s entire production (with help from the Beat Butcha in organizing the live instruments; unbelievably, there are no samples AT ALL found on Wwcd), these are the sounds at the deepest heart of the Griselda collective, and a must listen for you old heads out there.

Westside Gunn (Left), his brother Conway the Machine (Middle), and their cousin Benny the Butcher (Right) are the three members representing Griselda on Wwcd. The album is named after Benny’s brother, Machinegun Black, who was murdered in cold blood, and would have been the fourth member of the crew had he lived to see it. RIP Chinegun.
