Weekly Fix #5

eX is back! K.R.I.T. iz here! And a lot of small shit! Let’s get to it

Here’s a link to the Week #5 Playlists for y’all

----PROJECTS----

Big K.R.I.T. – K.R.I.T. IZ HERE
Some high highs here, but some pretty low lows to match, particularly in the middle of the album. Lots of different sounds here from trap to R&B, but all have that southern soul to them. Worth a listen, but don’t expect 4eva is a Mighty Long Time.

Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire – Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire
It’s been a while hasn’t it? I loved his Brainiac EP, which I still think is his most lyrically impressive. This self-titled debut dabbles much heavier into his weirder, melodic, and strangely reflective side. Wide variety of sounds, all with a left field twist, and all with eX’s off the wall and brutally honest lyrics. Listen if you like weird shit.

Ed Sheeran – No.6 Collaborations Project
Ed really impressed me with this one; I came for the features and left feeling good about both Sheeran and the features. Also Ed Sheeran can kind of rap ok?? This is my first project of his so if this is known already I have no idea, but that definitely surprised me a couple times. Pop music with mainstream hip-hop collaborators.

Hus Kingpin – Slime Wave
There’s a couple good tracks here, mostly the features and beats bring the heat as Hus is a below average MC. Wu-Tang inspired (and co-signed it looks like), but slowed waaaay down, like a mob-movie soundtrack lost in space. Combination of Fred the Godson and Roc Marciano. New York underground.

----SINGLES----

Slick Rick – Midas Touch
The better of the two singles he dropped recently, he might not sound fresh but he gets credit for trying. A good beat, throwback to some oldschool funk with DJ scratches and a tight sample, but the track being slightly longer than a minute is disappointing. Old School hip-hop, like 80’s shit.

Lil Nas X (Feat. Billy Ray Cyrus, Young Thug, & Mason Ramsey) – Old Town Road (Remix)
How can this song keep getting better? Young Thug is his weird old self here, and the Walmart kid is fantastic. Excellent additions to the Old Town Road universe that is building in front of our eyes. Old Town Road is a genre in and of itself.

Billie Eilish (Feat. Justin Bieber) – bad guy
Slowly coming to realize I love Justin Bieber, so I think this remix is fantastic. Justin’s verse has the right confidence required for the beat, and his voice can do no wrong. My only complaint is the adlibs Justin lays down, which can be a little cringy. Punchy pop-music

Future (Feat. Meek Mill & Doe Boy) – 100 Shooters
The recorder in this beat rules, and Meek and Doe Boy do well. But Future’s verse is terrible. It’s getting plays from me, but I will always cringe at Future’s part. Trap.

————————————————

Nas (Feat. Al Jarreau & Keyon Harrold) – Jarreau of Rap
I feel like I should like this song more than I do, but I sure as hell respect it. Nas is rapping faster than he has in years, and along to a beat that is wholly unconventional. Jazz Rap?

————————————————

Project Pat (Feat. Young Dolph & Key Glock) – CheezNDope
Excellent remix to a classic Pat track. Beat is throw, Project P is bloodthirsty as usual, and Dolph couldn’t get grimier, but Key Glock didn’t really fit in my opinion. If you like Three Six, you’ll like this. Memphis murder music.

————————————————

Black Milk (Feat. BJ the Chicago Kid) – If U Say
Has a sort of abstract jazz/funk vibe. Black Milk isn’t the best rapper, but he has a classic underground Detroit voice. BJ is a nice addition to the track but he kind of comes and goes. Worth a listen for the beat at least. Backpacker/sample-based

————————————————

Krept & Konan (Feat. Headie One & K-Trap) – I Spy
A grime/pop fusion from the UK duo. It’s sleek and sexy, but the hook needed some more work, and the verses leave much to be desired. It’s punchy and fun to listen to tho. UK Grime

Rich The Kid (Feat. Roddy Ricch) – Go Up
Roddy Ricch steals the show on this once with a good hook and a really catchy verse. RTK is just kind of… there. Good trap beat and some good melody coming from Roddy. Soundcloud rap

————————————————

Da$h & V Don (Feat. Meechy Darko) – Fangs
Another cut where the guest completely outshines the host; Meech takes over this nocturnal beat with his devilish voice, while Da$h just kind of hazily glides over it. The hook in particular is quite lazy. Drugged out, spooky cloud rap.

RJMrLA (Feat. Young Thug) – Time
Once again, keeping to pattern, Thug outshines RJ by a mile. Since he’s changed his name from RJ to whatever the hell RJMrLA is, I’ve lost interest, but Thugger will bring me back. West Coast/Bay Area pop-rap

Cousin Stizz (Feat. City Girls) – Perfect
A cool banger, with a metallic sheen to the sound. It’s not the best lyrically, but it fits with the minimalist bass-heavy beat. Trap

Tory Lanez – Melee
Loving Tory on this one, with a catchy hook and melody, and a nice beat to boot. He’s been on once recently with his singles, and seeing as his last album was one of my favorites last year, I’m eagerly anticipating what’s next. Pop-rap

Joyner Lucas (Feat. Timbaland) – 10 Bands
Nice third single from the upcoming album, cute little beat where he spits his little raps. Some pretty funny quotables here. I’m interested, but we’ll see what the album brings.
